I just realized this at a different level and here's why...

Now days houses have no porch! "Houses in the U.S. built prior to the advent of air conditioning had prominent front porches, which fostered a sense of community as they served as a public meeting space. Leisure time meant conversing with neighbors, getting to know them and building community in the process. As cars became more prominent for transportation, and air conditioning allowed people to escape the heat without having to sit out on the front porch, and the enticement of television drew people indoors for leisure time, the front porch faded from architectural plans." -Andrew Jones from the book, "Fads, Fetishes, and Fun: A Sociological Analysis of Pop Culture"
